Most of the knowledge fed to the students is technology, science or work skills. But those can teach students how to be a man or cultivate their taste is abandoned. There’s no class in the curriculum to teach Chinese literature in most the universities, even there is, it is an optional course which means only dozens of people will be present in the class. This leads to a result that seldom of the students have sound knowledge of Chinese classical literature. The fact is, even the little knowledge of Chinese classical literature gained in middle school is almost forgotten. Yesterday, I watched a talk show, a famous educationalist named Ye Jiaying (叶嘉莹) said during the interview “The Chinese students are in lack of humanism knowledge”. I think her comment is just at the point. We are pumped into with much technology and science knowledge but no humanism. The logical result is that the society is not short of skilled workers but is in scarcity of real scholar.

University is designed to grow knowledge that ahead of time, not designed to train workers.
