Lost Horizon – 消失的地平线

March 15th, 2008   Filed under Books 'n Movies, English entries

I’ve just finished reading the book Lost Horizon by James Hilton. Well, I have to say that the book is far from my expectation. I was expecting find the beautiful Shagri-la in it, but, I don’t know whether it’s the cause of a traslated version, the description of Shargi-la in the book doesn’t leave me too much impression.

I don’t have much to say about the book. But if I was forced to say something, I would criticize the book for two reasons.

Firtly, I don’t like the end of the book. In the end the Conway let go the opportunity to preside Shangrila but help Luo Zhen, the beautiful girl in the book, to escape from Shangri-la. The end breaks all the beautiful things, the beautiful Shangri-la, the beautiful Luo Zhen and a possible moving love story between Conway and Luo Zhen. In my preference, I would let Conway fall in love with Luo Zhen and stay at Shangri-la.

Sencondly, the description of Shangri-la is disappointing. I’m know regretting I missed the very opportunity to see the real Shangri-la. I have heard of Shangri-la for some while. But it was after I deciding to go to Yunnan Province for my last year annual leave that I came to know that Shangri-la is the place where the story of Lost Horizon took place. Last December, I paid a visit to Shangriila county. The county had changed it name from Diqing to Shangriila in believe that the Blue Moon here is just the Shangrila described by James Hilton in the book. But the ticket price of Blue Moon Valey really scared me. I decided to give up the very opportunity to see the real Shangri-la.

I don’t recommend you to read the Chinese version, because I think the translator has lose much of the essense of the original. If it’s possible, try to find an English version. For brief of the book please refer to here: Chinese English.

I was surprised when I was reading your comment about book because you wrote it in english, (also some other articles in blog). while people surrounding me rarely do blogging in foreign language.
Furthermore, I appreciate your persistence on reading english book. usually I dont have enough patience to read thick book even it is my favorite novel “Gone with the wind”. I bought the original version of it and its sequel “Scarlett” by Alexandra Ripley, none of them was completely read up to now. hehe. It is a kind of shame, um!
P.S, the style of signature for site logo is great.
